THE AREA
The Dower House is nestled in the beautiful village of Lower Swell, a peaceful Cotswold village surrounded by rolling countryside, farmland and quintessential honey-coloured stone cottages. Sitting beside the River Dikler and just one mile from Stow-on-the-Wold, it offers the best of both worlds, a tranquil village setting with one of the Cotswolds’ best-loved market towns just minutes away. There are also wonderful countryside walks from the village, including routes towards Stow and through the surrounding landscape.
The village is also home to The Golden Ball, a traditional Cotswold pub serving hearty pub classics and local Donnington ales, with a cosy bar and garden overlooking the surrounding Cotswold hills – perfect for a relaxed lunch, evening meal or drink close to home.
Stow-on-the-Wold is well worth spending a few hours exploring. Its historic Market Square is surrounded by beautiful Cotswold stone buildings, independent boutiques, antique shops, traditional pubs and cosy cafés. At almost 800 feet above sea level, it is one of the highest Cotswold towns and has been an important meeting and trading point for centuries.
A short drive south brings you to Lower and Upper Slaughter, two wonderfully picturesque villages connected by countryside and riverside walks. Continue on to Bourton-on-the-Water, famous for its pretty low stone bridges crossing the River Windrush. It’s particularly good for families, with attractions including The Model Village and Birdland Park & Gardens.
To the north, Broadway is another must-visit, with its elegant High Street, independent shops, galleries and restaurants. Take a walk or drive up to Broadway Tower for spectacular views across the surrounding countryside. Nearby, the beautiful village of Snowshill is also home to National Trust - Snowshill Manor and Garden, while the famous lavender fields are a lovely seasonal addition to a summer day out.
Chipping Campden is another of the Cotswolds’ most beautiful historic market towns, with its impressive High Street, 17th-century Market Hall and wonderful collection of traditional Cotswold buildings. From here, walkers can also join the Cotswold Way and explore the countryside around Dover’s Hill.
For those wanting to explore a little further, Moreton-in-Marsh offers shops, cafés and its traditional market-town atmosphere, while Batsford Arboretum and Garden Center makes a lovely nearby day out. History lovers can venture to Winchcombe and visit Sudeley Castle, while the wider Cotswolds offer countless walking routes, historic villages, country pubs and beautiful viewpoints.
With so many of the Cotswolds’ best-known villages and attractions within easy reach, Lower Swell makes a wonderful base for exploring the area while still offering a peaceful countryside retreat to return to at the end of the day.
